The first symbols used by humankind were around 350,000 years ago when we painted on cave walls and even on our skin to identify ourselves with certain groups and beliefs. Here I am going to discuss some of the more common occult symbols, explaining their meanings and what they can do for you.

The sigil of Lucifer.

Although it may be surprising to some, the sigil of Lucifer rather than representing any form of death, destruction or suffering is used to describe creation, existence and power. As far as we are aware, this sigil originated in a book published in the 16th century entitled: The Grimoire of Truth. The formation of this symbol comes from what is known as a magic square. It contains an "X" symbolizing physical power, an inverted triangle which denotes water and the V at the bottom represents duality. The form as a whole is supposed to be a chalice which is a representation of creation.

Sigillum Dei Aemeth.

The Sigillum Dei Aemeth or the Seal of the Truth of God is another 16th-century symbol which was conceived by the occultist and astrologer John Dee. This symbol is not strictly an invention of Dee alone as it appears in older texts. Likely, Dee was not entirely content with the form in which he found it and decided to update it after taking counsel from angels in the final re-design. The Sigillum is constructed of both heptagrams and heptagons (7 sided shapes) as seven sides are closely connected with the traditional seven planets of astrology. The rings contain the names of angels (each associated with a planet) with the name of God Himself in the centre. The purpose of this sigil was so that the user might convene with angels to seek their guidance.

Seal of Asmoday.

Asmodeus is a prince of demons who is mostly known for being the main antagonist in the Book of Tobit. He is said to represent lust and is believed by some Renaissance Christians to be the King of the Nine Hells. According to the Ars Goetia, Asmodeus should be summoned by one who desires:

learn arithmetic, astronomy, geometry and handicrafts

full answers on demand (presumably on any question the magician has)

invincibility

find treasures and preserve them

Baphomet

Perhaps the most recognizable of all occult symbols is the head of Baphomet. Baphomet dates back to the times of the Inquisition when the French chroniclers accused the Knights Templar of worshipping a false God called Baphometh. There are many references to Baphomet over the centuries and from various sources which have made it difficult to denote the true meaning of the symbol. The best-known image of Baphomet, however, was drawn in 1856 by the French occultist Eliphas Levi. Baphomet is depicted as a winged hermaphrodite with a torch between its horns and a pentagram on its forehead. Baphomet is typically depicted as having two fingers pointing to the heavens and two to hell; This is a representation of the perfect balance between mercy with justice.

Seal of Astaroth

Astaroth, although starting life as a Goddess underwent various changes during the Medieval era and turned into an ugly man riding a dragon while holding a snake. Astaroth may be summoned by people because of his ability to grant friendship to Lords. It is said that Astaroth is most powerful on Fridays between the hours of 10-11 PM. A word of caution to those who wish to summon him, he is said to give off a terrible stench so its advisable to maintain a distance. He likes to talk about the past, present and future and is known to relish in discussions regarding the creation of the world.

Seal of Babalon

The seal of Babalon appears in the writings of the British occultist Aleister Crowley. Babalon is a Goddess who appears in the religion of Thelema - founded by Crowley himself - and is said to represent the female sexual impulse and the liberated woman.

In this post, I want to tell you all about a Youtuber I came across who does some fantastic work in the occult and paranormal research.
