Well, the word "occult" comes from the Latin “occultare” meaning secret and became part of day to day speech through the 20th and 21st century. The roots of Occultism seem to be found in 19th century France, where it was used by various esoteric groups who practised: Spiritualism, Magic and Astrology amongst many, other things.

So, what is it?!

Well, that's a straightforward question to answer. The occult is at its most basic any practice or belief which doesn't fall into the realm of science or religion. Typical occult practices can, therefore, range from Satanic worship to keeping fairies in a jar. If you practice the latter, make sure to clean the jar frequently. As Richard Smoley points out in his lecture on the occult and magic (link below), one difference which characterizes the occult is that the goal of the Occultist is not contacting God. The Occultist strives to use his/her own will to shape the energies of the universe, or perhaps even become a God themselves.

The media has done a beautiful job of portraying the occult as a group of deranged people dancing around a maypole trying to summon Lucifer to do their bidding. Although that certainly can be your experience of the occult, for most people it takes an entirely different form. For many, the occult is a more inclusive, less dogmatic replacement for mainstream religion.

So, what form do these anti (mainstream)-religious beliefs usually take? As I mentioned above, the occult is a very personal experience; however, the practice which is most in fashion now seems to be Satanism.

In defining what Satanists believe, we run into a massive hurdle straight away. There are nearly as many versions of Satanism as there are other religions in the world.

To begin with, we can divide Satanists into two groups: Theistic and Rationalistic. When deciding which version of Satanism is right for you, you must ask yourself, “do I believe Satan is a real entity?” If you don’t believe in a living, breathing Satan, then the beliefs of the Church of Satan might be for you.

It might not sound so inviting, but they really aren’t that dark, and probably won’t try and sacrifice you when you aren’t looking. The Church of Satan, like most other Rational Satanists, have a very humanistic ethos. This ethos is best summed up by La Vey himself:

Do unto others as others do unto you

Take a look at the Nine Satanic statements and see what you think.

Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence!

Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams!

Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit!

Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it instead of love wasted on ingrates!

Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek!

Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires!

Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development,” has become the most vicious animal of all!

Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!

Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as He has kept it in business all these years!

(Above statements taken from the Church of Satan website: https://www.churchofsatan.com/)

The Church of Satan has adopted the devil as a figure to embody the ego and revere it above all other things. If you believe that we are nothing more than animals who shouldn’t shun our carnal and bestial instincts to try and be someone else’s definition of Good, then this might be the anti-religion for you.

You may, however, find yourself on another point of the pentagram and believe that Satan is an actual living breathing bad boy. If so, it can very easily be argued that you are, in fact, a Christian who supports the other team. Amongst Satanists, the term reverse-Christian is used in a derogatory way, but how can one logically believe in the devil without also acknowledging the existence of Christ and God.

The influence of accepting the actual devil into your belief system seems to differentiate the practice of the theistic Satanist very little from the atheistic. The only difference appears to be that the theistic Satanist has a source in which they can ground their faith. However, nearly all flavours of Satanism preach the nourishment of the ego and self-aggrandization as something to be sought after. As Diane Vera concludes in her article on The Absurdity of Evil as a principle: To the theistic Satanist, Good and Evil are not defined by how they affect humanity, but rather to what extent your actions cause you to rebel or submit to God. Still no mention of sacrificing children. (http://theisticsatanism.com/Muse/evilRose.html)

The occult is whatever you want it to be (more or less), and the pop culture representation we have been fed over the years, in reality, are extraordinary exaggerations of the true beliefs and practices of the occultist.

Hello to all you lovers of strange!
